After dropping his friend at the base, Mike stopped by the bank and signed papers to move thirty thousand dollars from the credit line into their checking account. He told the clerk Sarah would drop by later in the day. The bank needed both signatures.

When he arrived home, he found Sarah in the kitchen balanced on a set of steps, clearing out the top cabinets. He stood in the doorway for a few seconds, admiring the view. Perhaps they could get her folks to babysit and have a date night, soon. Yeah, he would run that by her. Because of the kids, things had been tense since he returned. A nice meal out would do them both good.

“What’re you up to?” he asked.

She shrieked, grabbed the wobbly ladder, and climbed down. “I almost had a heart attack. Don’t sneak in like that.”

He laughed. “Sorry.” Her hair was mussed, and she had a black smudge below her left eye.

“You’ve got something here,” he said, touching his cheek.

She glanced in the wall mirror and rubbed at the dirt with a cleaning rag.

“Guess who I just drove to the base?” he said.

She faced him, hands on hips, face flat, waiting.

“Jeese. Looks like you’ve got a flea in your panties.” When did Sarah become Mrs. Grumpy? “Yaz. He called this morning, and I met him for breakfast.”

Her face lit with a smile he had seen little of lately. “When did he get back?”

“Last night. I gave him a hard time for it, too. Told no one he was arriving and took himself to a hotel for the night.”

“How is he?”

“Better than I’d be if I’d lost both legs.”

“No shit, Sherlock.”

A tidal wave of anger tore through him. “What the hell’s that supposed to mean?”

They locked eyes. Silence descended. The kitchen clock’s tick filled the chasm between them.

“Nothing.” She sighed out the word. “I need to get this finished. I have to drop by the store to pick up dinner before Christopher gets out of kindergarten.” She turned her back on him, climbed the steps again, and resumed her cleaning the cupboard.

Here we go again with frosty Sarah. “Yaz is coming in on the LightCube deal. He’s putting up thirty thou.”

She stopped working but didn’t turn. “He must be sure, then.”

“It’s a safe bet. Look, Sarah, the Militec guy is in for twenty, so is Butch. Yaz brings thirty. And so should we. I dropped by the bank and filled out the forms. They’re waiting for your approval. Why not drop by and sign the papers on your way to the store.”

She stepped down again and turned to face him. “You’re certain, then?”

“Of course. We agreed. Why?”

Sarah put her hands on her hips. “Why?” Her lips were a thin white line. “Let me see: You hardly ever want sex. You can’t stand the kids. You fly off the handle at every opportunity. You’re drinking during the day. Mostly, you wish you were still in Iraq with your buddies. Does this sound like a good time to start a new venture that puts our home at risk?”

The muscles in his jaw bunched.
